From the July 2006 Idaho Observer:

Countdown to Armageddon?

Theologians view the Battle of Armageddon as both prophecy of a great battle among the godless nations that will take place in the Valley of Armageddon in what is now Palestine and as a parable describing the battles within us all when evil has consumed our hearts.

It appears that the prophecy of a great battle could manifest as there appears to be no grounds upon which diplomacy may achieve a cease fire in the current and quickly worsening Middle East conflict.

As for the parable, consider this: The Editor and Publisher Journal surveyed dozens of America’s largest newspapers to find that very few are opposed to Israel openly bombing civilian targets in Lebanon. "Israel must vigorously defend its right to exist," stated the Chicago Sun Times—a sentiment held by the Bush administration and God knows how many Americans. Parabolically, the battle of Armageddon is currently raging in the heart of America.

Armageddon,

According to the New Testament, the place where the kings of the Earth under demonic leadership will wage war on the forces of God at the end of world history. The Palestinian city of Megiddo was probably used as a symbol because of the strategic location of nearby mountains made them a famous battlefield in Palestinian history...Other biblical references suggest Jerusalem as the site of the final battle.
