Senate, House (almost) unanimously vote "unwavering support" of Israel’s "right" to exterminate Palestinians

Congress passes AIPAC-approved resolution to support Israel’s "right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza"

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Senate voted unanimously by voice to approve an unbinding resolution sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to support the Israeli "incursion" into Gaza Jan. 8, 2009. The House followed by passing H.Res. 34 Jan. 9 by a margin of 390-5 (with 38 absent or present and not voting) as sponsored by House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

"When we pass this resolution, the United States Senate will strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel, by reaffirming Israel’s inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza, as well as our support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process," Sen. Reid said prior to the unanimous/anonymous Senate voice vote being taken.

"I proudly support this resolution...Today we reaffirm that Israel, like any nation, has the right to self defense when under attack...Security for Israel and an improvement in the lives of the people of Gaza cannot be achieved as long as Hamas uses that impoverished land as a launching pad against the Israelis," Pelosi stated Jan. 9, 2009.

Both Reid and Pelosi acknowledge unwavering support for Israel and its rights but do not afford the same courtesy to the Palestinians in Gaza. Additionally, a review of the resolutions passed almost unanimously in both houses on Capitol Hill, reportedly drafted by the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, is riddled with historical and real time inaccuracies.

Prior to assuming office, Obama claimed that "working with Israelis and Palestinians to achieve the goal of two states, a Jewish state in Israel and a Palestinian state, living side by side in peace and security," will be a "diplomatic priority." Every president before him since Truman made similar promises.
