From the May 2005 Idaho Observer: Senate unanimously approves national ID
Despite years of general opposition and the last several weeks of focused activism, the Senate approved its version of HR 418—the REAL ID Act—100-0. The Senate version of REAL ID was actually buried in a supplemental appropriations bill that included funding for the Iraq war effort. "The REAL ID is vital to preventing foreign terrorists from hiding in plain sight while conducting their operations and planning attacks. By targeting terrorist travel, the REAL ID will assist in our War on Terror efforts to disrupt terrorist operations and help secure our borders," said House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) after the bill obtained Senate approval. At left is an example of what the new national ID may look like. The new card will incorporate the latest technology to make the bearer’s most personal information available to authorities. We can now see one reason why the federal government has promoted illegal migration from Mexico: To create the problem justifying the mandate for the invasive, high-tech national ID.
